The Special Recycling Program helps lab users to recycle lab plastics in partnership with Polycarbin. The program was launched in 2023 at IGB and expanded to BioEpic in 2025. Scroll down for training resources to learn what materials are accepted in what bin so you can participate in the program.

Pictured above: JGI's very first waste audit in March of 2019 at their previous facility in Walnut Creek! The team identified that 70% of the waste generated at the site came from the laboratories. To meet the Lab's zero waste goals of diverting 90% of materials from the landfill into recycling or compost, new methods of doing things needed to be developed. This is why we are trying a new lab plastics recycling program as most of the plastics generated in the lab work aren't accepted by traditional recycling programs.
